A man helping another man out of the snow

Out of the files of Snowpocalypse—the unforgettable dump of March snow in Douglas County, Oregon—comes this heartwarming picture of neighbor helping neighbor.

Shown here is a good Samaritan doctor who wishes to remain anonymous making a different kind of house call as he brings a stranded neighbor to safety. It was not just any neighbor, but 94-year-old Sherman Talbot, a World War II Battle of the Bulge survivor and former prisoner of war who has a love of jazz and a zest for life. His neighbors know him as a great cook and crafty card player.

With so many fallen trees, just getting near his driveway took the combined efforts of caring neighbors and young men with saws.

As upbeat as ever, Sherman had to spend 18 days away from home as Douglas Electric Cooperative linemen worked to restore power throughout the area.

The challenging snowfall brought out the best in many.
