Manufactured home parks are a staple of rural living. They provide affordable housing to a segment of our society that often struggles to make ends meet.
Many manufactured home parks have been in place for years, and the land has become quite valuable. Unfortunately, when the land value outstrips the money the park ownership makes from rent, selling to developers becomes an attractive option. This cycle forces an already challenged group to seek new housing in an even tighter housing market.
Nationwide, about 2% of manufactured home parks are now resident-owned. This enables residents to have more control over the cost and ownership of the land they live on. By forming a co-op and buying the park, residents no longer fear that an outside developer will displace them.
On page 12, you can read about Northwest manufactured home residents who live in resident-owned parks and learn how the process works.
Affordable housing is important, but so is keeping your home safe and in good repair. Our story on page 10 provides great tips for ensuring the wildlife in your neighborhood stays wild and in the woods rather than taking up residence under your deck or peeking into your windows looking for food. While that sounds cute, some wild animals must be killed when they become dependent on humans for food.
And, finally, October is National Cooperative Month and when we celebrate Public Power Week. Make sure to thank the employees at your utility for their efforts to keep your power flowing.
